WhatsApp is working on encrypted and password protected chat backups for iCloud and Google Drive. According to reports from WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is working on introducing a security feature to protect their chat backups with a password and encryption that allows users to protect their WhatsApp chat backups from unauthorised access with a password.
This feature allows users to use passwords to protect databases and discussion media from unauthorized access. As you can see in the screenshot attached, this feature command prompts the user for a phone number when encrypting a chat backup using a password. The user can then set a password to encrypt future backups.
WABetaInfo also shows that passwords are not shared with WhatsApp, and according to screenshots, Messenger cannot help recover forgotten passwords for the same reason. As you can see from the screenshots, future features will be available in both the iOS and Android versions of the app. Also note that this feature also works for local Android backups.
WhatsApp does not share official information about this feature at this time. But I look forward to hearing more in the coming weeks. Please note that this is not the first time I’ve heard about this feature. WABetaInfo first explained in May last year, but it didn’t have much information.
